»The Iahud Tablets«

Project outline:
Die Deportation Tausender Judäer durch Nebukadnezar wird in der Bibel als »Babylonische Gefangenschaft« thematisiert und ist daher gut bekannt. Seit etwa einhundert Jahren sind babylonische Keilschrifttexte bekannt, aus denen hervorgeht, daß Personen vom Jerusalemer Hof regelmäßig in Babylon mit Nahrungsmitteln versorgt werden und als »Gäste« bzw. Gefangene oder Geiseln dort leben.
Nunmehr gibt es c. 240 Texte, die ein anderes Bild von deportierten Judäern und deren Nachkommen malen: Sie stammen aus dem Hinterland im Osten oder Südosten vom Babylon, wo Judäer auf Königsland in ethnisch homogenen Gruppen – als eine von vielen – angesiedelt wurden. Die Texte sind Rechtsurkunden und fokussieren auf verschiedene Aspekte des täglichen Lebens, insbesondere solche, die eine Beziehung zu staatlichen Beamten betreffen, die Steuern eintreiben und Arbeitskräfte für Großbauten (Kanäle, Paläste, Tempel) aufbieten mussten, Die Urkunden folgen dem babylonischen Formular und wurden von babylonischen Schreibern verfasst. Diese Urkunden, die in Kürze veröffentlicht vorliegen werden, bilden den Gegenstand der Forschung, die ich gemeinsam mit dem Rechtshistoriker Guido Pfeifer durchführen werde. (Cornelia Wunsch)

Scholarly profile of Cornelia Wunsch


Cornelia Wunsch received her PhD from the Department of Oriental Studies at the University of Hamburg in 1992. She has taught at the Universitat de Barcelona, University of Western Australia, School of Oriental and African Studies, London University and Göttingen University; she has conducted research on cuneiform documents at the British Museum in London for many years. In April 2022 she handed in her Habilitation thesis at Leipzig University with the paper Judeans by the Waters of Babylon.
