Welcome to the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften

A laboratory for innovative knowledge in society

The Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften located in Bad Homburg is an Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities attached to the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. Its establishment in 2009 was due to the collaborative efforts of the Goethe University and the Werner Reimers Foundation, which is renowned for its promotion of the humanities and social sciences. The Forschungskolleg provides an environment in which scholars from all over the world who are experts in their respective fields are able to pursue their research into socially relevant issues on an interdisciplinary basis in consultation with other scholars from the local region. The topics and projects involved are closely linked to the research being carried out at the University, and work carried out at the Forschungskolleg often generates ideas that flow back into the University’s teaching programs. Public lectures held at the Institute contribute to its role as a forum for dialog between scholarship and society.

As a part of the University, the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften embodies in concrete form the aim of consistently pursuing the development of academic research in the field of the human sciences. In this context the Institute is collaborating closely with the Frankfurt-based Cluster of Excellence »The Formation of Normative Orders.« Fellows invited to Bad Homburg by the Cluster become part of an academic community that includes guest scholars working on a range of different projects. Apart from this Excellence Cluster, the research group »Justitia Amplificata. Rethinking Justice – applied and global,« which is being funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), is also taking advantage of the opportunities afforded by the Forschungskolleg. Institutions supporting the Forschungskolleg’s Fellow and research programs also include the Hertie Foundation, the Goethe University’s Foundation for the Promotion of International Scientific Relations and the Alfons und Gertrud Kassel Foundation.

The Forschungskolleg, with its offices, common rooms, seminar rooms, conference hall and library, is located in a sprawling park, on the edge of which lies the guest house used by foreign scholars. Its distance from and proximity to Frankfurt and the Goethe University mean that the Forschungskolleg is also able to offer a rather special location for scholarly conferences, workshops and lectures.
