Alexander Leveringhaus Postdoctoral Fellow Resident at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften: September 2011−April 2012 Research topic at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften: »Liberal Interventionism: Philosophical Perspectives« Project outline: Broadly speaking, I will continue to work on the ethics of humanitarian intervention, not least due to the renewed public interest in this topic following military action in Libya. First, in response to the dismal failure of the international community to halt the Rwandan genocide in 1994, the international community developed the so-called Responsibility to Protect. But because its foundations remain opaque, my research utilizes the insights of contemporary political theory in order to clarify why military intervention may sometimes be morally and politically mandatory. Second, in a more abstract and philosophical sense, I will critically probe the relationship between theories of (global) justice and just war theory. Finally, I will research some theoretical issues arising in the reconstruction of post-conflict societies, especially with regard to the question how members of these societies can repair their moral relationships (reconciliation, truth commissions etc.). Rethinking Justice − Applied and Global«Scholarly profile of Alexander LeveringhausAlexander Leveringhaus received his PhD in Government (area of specialization: Political Theory) from the Department of Government at the London School of Economics in March 2011. His thesis develops a liberal perspective on the ethics military humanitarian intervention: »Killing to Rescue? Liberal Political Theory, non-consequentialist ethics and military humanitarian intervention«. From 2008 until 2010, he occupied the post of LSE Fellow of Political Theory in the Department of Government. He was awarded an LSE Teaching Prize for his contribution to teaching in the department. During the summer semester 2011, he taught, by invitation, at the Technical University Darmstadt.
