Research topic at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften:
»Formen friedlicher Koexistenz in multiethnischen und multireligiösen Ortschaften Georgiens«

Project outline:
Beforscht wird ein multiethnisches Dorf in Georgien, in dem die Religion, jene herausragende Differenz- und Trennlinie zwischen dort lebenden christlichen und muslimischen Gruppen, zur vereinigenden Kraft wird. Mittels des Rituals der Taufe, im Zuge dessen muslimische Paten zu Hütern einer christlichen Seele werden, übernehmen sie die Rolle auserwählter Christen, bleiben dennoch zugleich Muslime. Wie ethnografisch beobachtet, wird der weltliche Frieden in der Tradition der christlichen Taufe immer wieder bekräftigt, indem muslimische Paten zur Taufe von christlichen Kindern (aus-)gewählt und bestimmt werden. Analysiert wird, wie dieses Ritual genau praktiziert wird, welche soziale Bedeutungen daraus erwachsen und wie sie den Alltag formen.

Im Fokus der Forschung steht der weltliche Frieden als Leistung wie Verpflichtung gleichermaßen. Diese Verpflichtung impliziert eine gewisse Zerbrechlichkeit. Der Frieden ist keine stabile, garantierte Struktur, sondern eine immerfort herzustellende Errungenschaft alltäglicher Aushandlung und »Diplomatie«. In einer performativitätstheoretischen Perspektive wird Frieden aufgeführt, findet statt in Praktiken, etwa der zitierenden Bezugnahme auf Texte. Frieden impliziert Verwundbarkeit, was immerzu auch eine gewisse Disbalance impliziert. (Ketevan Gurchiani)

Ketevan Gurchiani follows an invitation of Isabell Diehm (Professor of educational science at Goethe University), Patricia Stošić (research assistant at the departement of educational science at Goethe University) and the University's research center »Religiöse Positionierung. Modalitäten und Konstellationen in jüdischen, christlichen und islamischen Kontexten« (»Religious Positioning: Modalities and Constellations in Jewish, Christian and Islamic Contexts«).

Ketevan Gurchiani is Professor of Cultural Studies and Religion at Ilia State University in Tbilisi, Georgia. From 2015 to 2018, she led the research project »Everyday Religion among Young Georgians«, which focused on the significance of religion in the post-Soviet transformation society of Georgia as an everyday phenomenon in various dimensions, for example in the school life of young people.
