Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften
Workshop

Guido Friebel (Goethe University), Daniela Grunow (Goethe University)
»The Determinants of Careers for Women and Men: Institutions, Professions, Organizations and Households«

About the Workshop
Our goal is to bring together researchers from sociology, economics, management, and other social sciences to present and discuss their work related to this broader topic. We also plan to have an open discussion session on “Gender equality reversals” and their consequences for gendered careers in different countries and on different levels of analysis, i.e. national, regional, organizational, individual. We are of the impression that the development of gender equality in different spheres of society is not best described as steady progress, but rather, as a process marked by numerous episodes of disruption and reversal. There is respective evidence from formerly socialist societies, but also from Turkey and North Africa. We also observe backlash driven by authoritarian regimes all over the world, and remarkable differences in gender equality across different professions, and even within the scientific world. This workshop brings together colleagues from economics and sociology interested in sharing their knowledge about developments of gendered careers and gender equality on different levels: nations, professions, organizations, and households.
