»Great minds in despair ‒ the forced-migration of German-speaking Neuroscientists to North-america, 1933‒1963«

Frank Stahnisch is a historian of medicine and neuroscience and has received his doctorate from the Free University of Berlin (Germany) in 2001. He holds the »Alberta Medical Foundation/Hannah Professorship in the History of Medicine and Health Care« at the University of Calgary (Canada) and is an Editor-in-Chief of the international Journal of the History of the Neurosciences.

About the project:
This project delves into under-researched historical terrain and seeks to advance our knowledge about the scope of the forced migration movement of German-speaking émigré psychiatrists, neurologists, and neuropathologists, along with their acculturation processes and impact on emerging interdisciplinary research landscapes in Canada and the US since the 1930s. It focuses on a significant – but historiographically neglected – group of neuroscientists and the ways that they contributed to innovative research centres in North America (e.g. the Montreal Neurological Institute; the Center for Integrative Neuroscience at UCSF, or the Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA). These and similar internationally renowned centers serve as case studies to provide context to the vast number of historiographically useful documents, included in a research database of émigrés that allows for the development of a detailed prosopography of German-speaking émigré neuroscientists in North America during the 20th century.
