»Parliamentary ethics in the EU and the US«Abstract
This presentation examines the development of normative criteria for parliamentary deontology through a comparative analysis of the EU Parliament and the US Congress. It explores the genealogy of ethical norms in politics, identifies convergences and divergences between EU and US ethics committees, and seeks to evaluate the procedures and institutional designs that shape the understanding of political ethics in both contexts. Building on previous research on compromise in partisan environments, the project adopts an interdisciplinary approach that combines theoretical and empirical perspectives, drawing on philosophy, political theory, political history, and legal studies.
The speaker
Laure Gillot-Assayag earned a PhD in political theory from EHESS with a dissertation titled »The Ethics of Compromise in Democracy« and is currently an associate researcher at EHESS (Paris, France) at the center for research on politics (CESPRA) and a Democratic Vistas-fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at Goethe University Frankfurt.
