Scott Hendrix veröffentlicht sein Buch über Martin Luther: Visionary Reformer

Wer über Luther schreiben will, stößt auf einige Schwierigkeiten. Ein Mangel an Quellen zählt jedoch nicht dazu, wie Luther-Biograph Scott Hendrix darlegt. Der emeritierte Professor für Reformationsgeschichte, der am Theologischen Seminar der Princeton University lehrte, war 2011 Fellow am Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften. Dort arbeitete er, auf Einladung des Exzellenzclusters »Die Herausbildung normativer Ordnungen« und der Frankfurter Professorin für Neuere Geschichte Luise Schorn-Schütte, vier Monate intensiv über den Reformator. In dieser Zeit las er die Briefe Martin Luthers, derer über zweieinhalbtausend überliefert sind. Dabei ging es ihm vor allem um die Frage, wer Luther »wirklich« war – jenseits aller Klischees vom Rebellen, Genie, Bösewicht oder Befreier.

Nun ist Hendrix' Luther-Biographie Martin Luther. Visionary Reformer (Yale University Press) erschienen. Er stellt Luther in den Kontext seiner Zeit und seines Umfelds und beleuchtet viele Facetten der Persönlichkeit des Reformators. Dabei stellt sich der Kirchenhistoriker Hendrix einer großen Herausforderung: weder möchte er die Geschichte der Reformation ausblenden noch die Person Luthers in den Hintergrund treten lassen. Oder in anderen Worten: nicht lediglich darüber zu schreiben, was Luther tat, sondern darüber, wer er war. Die 2011 am Forschungskolleg diskutierte Frage ist im Buch stets präsent.

Am Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften ist das Thema aktuell. Das Historische Kolleg widmet sich unter Federführung von Luise Schorn-Schütte in seinem kommenden Themenjahr »Reformationen – Kontinuitäten und Brüche« der Auseinandersetzung mit Spezialaspekten der reformatorischen Bewegung.
