Research topic at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften:
»The Theory of Justice of John Rawls«

Project outline:
John Rawls holds that the primary subject of social justice is the basic structure of society—its major political and social institutions. This »basic structure assumption« leads to two scope restrictions for distributive justice. First, principles of distributive justice apply only to social institutions rather than the daily economic choices of citizens. Second, distributive justice applies only to the social institutions of a state rather than globally. My project is to examine the cases for both scope restrictions. I plan to argue that a case for restricting distributive justice to social institutions provides a case against restricting distributive justice to the state. (Andrew Greetis)
