»Walt Whitman: Democratic Vistas, 1871«

About the workshop
The workshop will focus on the American poet Walt Whitman's 1871 essay Democratic Vistas. Participants will discuss contributions by Patricia Hayes, Heike Schäfer, Klaus Günther and Zhiyi Yang with comments by Till van Rahden, Andreas Fahrmeir, Hanna Pfeifer and Martin Saar.

The organizers
Till van Rahden
Till van Rahden is a historian and teaches German and European Studies at the Université de Montréal. He has been working on the history of democracy for many years. In 2019, he published his book Demokratie. Eine gefährdete Lebensform (Frankfurt am Main: Campus).

Johannes Voelz
Johannes Voelz is Professor of American Studies at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. He is the author of two monographs, The Poetics of Insecurity: American Fiction and the Uses of Threat (Cambridge University Press, 2018) and Transcendental Resistance: The New Americanists and Emerson’s Challenge (University Press of New England, 2010).

The workshop is part of the research focus »Democratic Vistas. Reflections on the Atlantic World«, hosted by the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften. The interdisciplinary group of Goethe University scholars and international and regional affiliates addresses the potentials and limits of Atlantic cooperation with regard to the future of democracy from various perspectives and disciplines.
