»Prophethood and the Prophet Mohammad in the Qur'an«About the subject
The phenomenon of »prophethood« has an important place in the tradition of monotheistic religions. In the narrations of the Qur'an, many subjects are explained through the institution of »prophethood«. So much so that 1/3 of the Qur'an consists of the narration of what happened to the Prophets and their companions. When we bring together the verses that deal directly or indirectly with features of the prophets, we come across this picture: The Qur'an not only insists that Prophets were »normal and ordinary people« by nature; at the same time, it clearly states that the Prophet Mohammad had no superiority over other Prophets. This image of the prophethood, which can be seen as a novelty in the theological context of late antiquity, is of course a correction according to the self-understanding of the Qur'an. It will be interesting to take a look at how much this Qur'anic picture determines religious life in practice.
