»Why Newcomers Should Come First«

Abstract
This talk explores the connection between migration as a social fact and theories of relational egalitarianism. The arrival of immigrants inherently raises questions of legitimacy of membership, and of relations between citizens and citizens and the state. Therefore, I argue that it is crucial that relational egalitarians do not treat migration as an anomaly within a supposedly closed community and instead theorize migration as an inherent aspect of democratic and relational equality. Further, I ask what migration processes can teach us about the observational strategies that relational egalitarianism can provide to social scientists, in order to make relational inequality tacit as a subject of social inquiry.
