The lecture
The meteoric rise of White Nationalism in the United States during the past three years has exposed the extent to which racism and antisemitism fester throughout the country. Scholars debate whether antisemitism is a species of racism (»hate«) or a separate phenomenon, and whether the same methods should be deployed against both. To what extent can and should Jews and African Americans join in combatting racism and antisemitism? What alliance between the two groups is possible and useful in the American context?
Many American Jews turn with pride to the active participation of Jews in the Civil Rights Movement (CRM), in which numerous rabbis and Jewish students took part in disproportionate number – and some died. The CRM alliances remain a powerful and inspiring memory, and many Jews long to revive the alliances of the 1960s. Yet the political context has changed and tensions between the two groups have increased sharply in recent decades for reasons that will be explained.
This lecture will speak about the complex relations between Jews and the CRM; how African American experience might revise Jewish historical understanding; and discuss several new scholarly analyses of anti-Black racism published in recent years.

The speaker
Prof. Susannah Heschel is the Eli Black Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College. Her scholarship focuses on Jewish-Christian relations in Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of biblical scholarship, and the history of anti-Semitism. She has also taught at Southern Methodist University and Case Western Reserve University.
