New programme at the Institute
Aventis Foundation to provide funding for a new project at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften
Establishment of an »Interdisciplinary Programme for Complexity Research«

Thanks to the financial support of the Aventis Foundation, the Institute will establish an »Interdisciplinary Programme for Complexity Research« beginning in 2017. In this project, natural and life scientists as well as scholars of the humanities and social sciences will analyze the epistemological concept of complexity and the various uses of the term complexity in the participating academic fields. Strategies for dealing with complex structures in academics, politics, society and culture will be developed. With this topic, the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften will take on one of the core subjects in the development of the research profile of Goethe University.

The project will be led by Professor Matthias Lutz-Bachmann, Director of the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften and professor of philosophy at Goethe University, and Professor Harald Schwalbe, professor of organic chemistry and chemical biology also at Goethe University. During the pilot phase in 2017, a group of researchers from various disciplines will join the project as the core working group to identify specific topics and methodological approaches and to determine the working plan for the coming years. Both project leaders emphasize that »the particular appeal of the project lies in its methodological and thematic openness. By providing financial support, the Aventis Foundation is giving us the space to develop new topics of investigation and new forms of academic cooperation.«
