Der Referent
Wolfgang Merkel ist Professor em. für Politikwissenschaft an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Er war von 2004–2020 Direktor der Abteilung »Demokratie und Demokratisierung« am Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung. 2021 lehrt er an der Hertie School of Governance. Er ist Mitglied der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Mitglied im Wissenschaftlichen Beirat des unabhängigen Berliner Thinktanks »Das Progressive Zentrum« sowie weiterer Wissenschaftsgremien. Er ist seit 1998 parteiloses Mitglied in der Grundwertekommission beim Parteivorstand der SPD.

Die Vortragsreihe: »Perspektiven der Sozialdemokratie in Europa«
In ganz Europa verlieren die sozialdemokratischen und die demokratischen sozialistischen Parteien seit einigen Jahren auf dramatische Weise an Zustimmung bei den Wählern. Zugleich konnten in vielen Ländern neue politische Bewegungen, häufig rechtspopulistische Parteien, große Stimmengewinne erzielen. Diese Entwicklung hat in jedem Land unterschiedliche historische, kulturelle, gesellschaftliche und politische Gründe. Dennoch liegen ihr auch gemeinsame oder ähnliche Ursachen und übergreifende Trends zugrunde.
Die Vortragsreihe analysiert in einer vergleichenden Perspektive die Gründe, die zu diesen Entwicklungen geführt haben. Sie wird auch der Frage nachgehen, ob insbesondere das transnationale Zusammenwirken innerhalb der Europäischen Union für die Sozialdemokratie die Chance bietet, zu einer neuen Rolle und Stärke zu gelangen. Angesichts der aktuellen Herausforderungen der parlamentarischen Demokratie scheint diese Frage für die anderen demokratischen Parteien und Bewegungen in Europa ebenfalls von großer Bedeutung zu sein.
