Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften of Goethe University
Evening lecture

Deborah Lipstadt (Emory University)
»Contemporary Antisemitism: Old Text in a New Binding?«

About the lecture

Not only in Germany, but also worldwide, cases of anti-Semitically motivated discrimination and violence, the ideological basis of which is manifold and complex, have been increasing in recent times. In her book »Der neue Antisemitismus« (Berlin Verlag), published in German in 2018, the renowned American historian and Holocaust researcher Deborah Lipstadt traces the forms of expression of this frighteningly virulent hatred in Europe, the USA and the Middle East and explains the causes of its rise beyond right-wing extremist and Islamist milieus. She points out what Jews and gentiles need to know in order to counter the new anti-Semitism and warns against the universal consequences of a hatred that spreads like fire. »Jews are something like the yardstick of society. Those who attack them attack all democratic and multicultural values.«
