About the speaker:

Her work combines economic theory, economic history, China studies and global political economy.

Abstract:

»I would focus on the price reform debate of the 1980s to delineate the connection between the Dual Track Price System and the traditional Chinese practices and theories of price regulation. In a next step, I would contrast this genealogy with the critique of dual pricing as articulated by neoclassical Eastern European market socialists and World Bank economists in their advising activities in China on the one hand and the appraisal of gradual price reform through a dual track system by Alec Cairncross based on his experience of transition after WWII, on the other. In the conclusion, I would highlight the difference between economics as a science of practice and a science of ideals as well as the specifically Chinese relationship between the state and the market as manifested in the practice of regulating the market through market participation by the state. I hope that the analysis of the critical crossroads of the 1980s in the larger context of Chinese history of economic thought will contribute to your project of comparison with European economic thought.« (Isabella Weber)

The lecture is part of the project on »Chinese and European History of Economic Thought in Comparison«, which is led by Goethe-Fellows Iwo Amelung and Bertram Schefold.
