»A philosophical reflection on the early history of Senegambia«Abstract
My plan to write a history of Senegambia (West Africa) during the century immediately preceding and following the arrival on the coast of the first European mariners (1400–1600), has been significantly altered by the colloquia here at the Forschungskolleg, with their focus on democracy and its challenges. Senegambian cultures follow a distinctive identity model, one divorced from reference to skin color and characterized by multiple, changing identities. Partly in response to the colloquia, partly as a challenge to myself, and very much as an experiment, I have decided to view the early history of this region and its distinctive identity model, through the filter of moral philosophy, as articulated by Martin Buber and Paul Ricœur.
