The lecture

Bruce Ackerman shows how the American presidency has transformed itself into a potential platform for political extremism and lawlessness. Watergate, Iran-Contra, and the War on Terror are only symptoms of deeper pathologies. We should not be fooled by Barack Obama’s centrism and internationalism. It will not typify the presidencies of the twenty-first century. The present moment does, however, provide an opportunity to confront deeper presidential pathologies. But will America seize the moment and take the necessary steps to tame the presidency?
