»Commentary as Science?«

Commentary is a fundamental mode of scholarship. It is present in all script cultures we know. Commentaries exercise power over knowledge—and over knowers— and shape worldviews, both by authorizing canonical texts and by criticizing the past and the present. Theology began in commentary forms, and scriptural commentaries remain a key task for contemporary theologians. Moreover, the historical study of commentary traditions is often central in historical theology. But is commentary itself science?

Robert Gibbs ist Professor für Philosophie und Religion an der Universität Toronto. Er hat das interdisziplinär arbeitende Jackman Humanities Institute der Universität gegründet und zehn Jahre geleitet.
