Projektbeschreibung

My research aims at investigating multivariate logics and dynamics of urban modernization in the turn of the twentieth century Istanbul through the lens provided by the stray animals’ experience of modernity – disruption of multi-species composition of the urban space and culturally entrenched practices of protection, care and sheltering of the strays; distancing from emergent public sphere through several administrative and regulative practices of spatial re-organization and confinement to distinct spheres (by building of zoos, remaking of public gardens) that only allowed densely regulated encounters between the nascent urban public and »enclosed« animal otherness; and finally, extermination at the mass scale.rnFocusing on the stray animal exterminations (particularly those in Istanbul between 1908 and 1913) as key to unravel the entanglements of the spatial politics of modernity in the non-Western urban contexts; I aim to sort out the effective intertwinements of both human and non-human, visible and non-visible, material and symbolic dynamics, powers, logics and agencies that were simultaneously at work in the making of the modern urban space in Istanbul.
