Wim Pouw Research Fellow, Radboud Universität Nijmegen, Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour Aufenthalt am Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften: November–Dezember 2023Forschungsthema am Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften: »Expressing Experiences and Experiencing Expressions: Interrogating the Representational Model of Communication«Projektbeschreibung: In my stay I want to get a better understanding of the possibilities of communication that are based on non-representational ways of thinking about language and a wider ecology of animal versus AI communication. For example, we can see that some signals that human and non-human animals emit, may be seen as impredicative, where utterances in their dynamic unfolding shape the experience that is being expressed and they thereby also express what is being experienced. Or some utterances that are produced at the boundaries of our capacities (shouting, whispering) may have meaning in virtue of operating at the boundaries of the body; they present rather than represent. In my planned investigation of these basic utterances, which may be thought of as the »gestural« rather than the »linguistic« interpretation of multimodal communication, I will work together with Cornelia Ebert where we seek to bring these intuitions into more precise focus and explore the use of different operationalizations of complexity within this context. Wissenschaftliches Profil von Wim PouwWim Pouw ist Kognitionswissenschaftler am Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition, and Behaviour an der Radboud University Nijmegen und erforscht die Lautproduktion und deren Koordination mit Körperbewegungen. Er hat Masterabschlüsse in Sozialpsychologie und theoretischer Psychologie und promovierte im März 2017 in Kognitionswissenschaften an der Erasmus-Universität Rotterdam. Anschließend forschte er an verschiedenen Instituten, unter anderem am Center for the Ecological Study of Perception and Action an der University of Connecticut (2018-2020). Seine Expertise liegt in quantitativen Ansätzen der Körperbewegungsanalyse (z.B. Motion-Tracking-Methodik, Zeitreihenanalyse) mit akustischem Tracking. In seiner Forschung kombiniert er ein breites Spektrum an theoretischen (radical embodied cognitive science, dynamische Systeme, Evolutionsbiologie) und methodischen (z. B. Datenwissenschaft, Bewegungswissenschaft, Bioakustik, Computer Vision, Phonetik) Interessen. Wim Pouw ist auch Mitglied des DFG-Schwerpunktprogramms »Visual Communication.
