Research topic at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften:
»Orthodox subject positions in crisis: New religious intellectualism and alternative femininity in post-revolutionary Iran«

Project outline:
After the institutionalization of formal and political narratives of religion in 1979, counter to the hardliners domination, gradually, new spiritual and religious demands have emerged: the grass-roots wired into new-fashioned religious cults and rites, mystical experiences, on the one hand, and intellectual religious revisionism on the other. Focusing on some contemporary religious intellectuals like Abdolkarim Soroush, Mohsen Kadivar, Ahmad Ghabel, in this research, I try to argue how the alternative religious interpretations pave the ground for a critical revision in orthodox approach to femininity, and in what extend they could provide women in Iran with alternative subject positions in their everyday life. Despite the fact that new intellectualism in Iran has been studied by some scholars (i.e. Boroujerdi, 1996; Mirsepasi, 2000, 2001, 2002; Jahanbakhsh, 2003 and 2004; Khavar, 2004; Ghobadzadeh & Rahim, 2012; Adib-Moghaddam, 2015; Safari, 2015), its contribution to the reformulation of women issues in Iran remain unattended. In turn, based on an in-depth thematic analysis of speeches, books, papers, essays, interviews and videos of famous religious intellectuals, this research claims to shed lights on emergent Islamic gender subjectivities.
