Research topic at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften:
»Why Free Will is Real«

Project outline:
The aim of my »Free Will« project is to defend a robust notion of free will against some prominent naturalistic critiques. It is often claimed by neuroscientists and others that free will is an illusion: a left-over from a pre-scientific way of thinking. If this critique were correct, it would profoundly challenge our human self-conception as agents and our established practices of responsibility ascription. It would also significantly challenge deontological morality. I hope to show, however, that free will – in a relatively strong sense that involves intentionality, alternative possibilities, and causal control – is compatible with a scientifically informed worldview.
