On the Interplay of Semantics and Pragmatics in Discourse
Frankfurt linguist Cornelia Ebert awarded funding for German-British research project

The Frankfurt linguist Cornelia Ebert has been awarded funding for a three-year research project, which she will carry out with her colleagues Richard Breheny (University College London), Jacopo Romuli (University of Bergen), Markus Steinbach (University of Göttingen), Clemens Steiner-Mayr (University of Göttingen) and Yasutada Sudo (University College London). The project, entitled »Interactions between Dynamic Effects and Alternative-Based Inferences in the Study of Meaning«, or IDEALISM for short, will be funded from July 2021 by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) as part of the program »UK-German Funding Initiative in the Humanities«.

The researchers are interested in the interplay of semantics and pragmatics in discourse, especially in dynamic aspects in discourse and their dependence on or interconnectedness with alternative-based inferences. The primary innovation of the planned research is that it will also include sign languages and speech-accompanying gestures, which belong to a field of research in which Cornelia Ebert already has many years of expertise.

More information about the project is available

Cornelia Ebert has been a professor of linguistics/semantics at Goethe University since 2019. She has been working on »Visual Communication« as a Goethe Fellow at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften since 2020.
