Fellows
Thomas Kaufmann awarded the 2020 Leibniz Prize
The Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften congratulates its former Fellow

Professor Dr. Thomas Kaufmann, professor of theology at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, was a guest at the Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften in the summer of 2016. It was announced this week that he and nine other researchers will be awarded the most prestigious research funding prize in Germany, the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize.

The awards announcement stated that his comprehensive and multifaceted work on church history has changed the way we view Martin Luther and the complex, globally significant movement of the Reformation. In this, he has brought religious motives to bear in a new way in the process of denominational development without, at the same time, ignoring the political, social and economic contexts. In addition, Kaufmann has made the Reformation era available to a broad public. Kaufmann's book Luther und die Juden (2014), which deals with Luther's hostility towards Jews, has shaped public debate. With this and other works, he has made significant contributions to historical research and interreligious understanding.

Congratulations!
