»Ein Kolonialreich als late comer: Italien in Äthiopien«

Abstract
On May 9, 1936 – from the famous balcony on Piazza Venezia in Rome – Mussolini proclaimed before a broad mass the rebirth of the ancient Roman empire after the occupation of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. The conquering expedition had begun on October 3, 1935. This belated colonialist conquest, camouflaged behind the neutral designation "War of Ethiopia", was the completion of the imperialist dynamism of Italy in the so-called "Horn of Africa". A delay which is historically particularly noteworthy: It was completely beyond the context of European imperialism, which had already reached its climax at the end of the nineteenth century. But the conquest of Ethiopia had now been carried through by a mass dictatorship, which differed deeply from the national states of the previous century. Colonialism and Dictatorship: This is the problematic interdependence that has to be analyzed.
